WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT KOREAN FOOD??!
Anyone who knows me, even just a little, is fully aware that I'm obsessed with food! I’m a foodie and most of the people I love are foodies too! Right?!
While living in Korea, my senses are in a state of shock! The spice is spectacular, as is the number of distinct ways rice and other simple ingredients can be made to taste different & so damn delectable! I'm excited for every new meal!
Living in Korea is teaching me about a whole other world of culinary thought and creativity. Korean’s appreciation of food presentation, natural ingredients and the combining of spirituality & community into their feasts is awe-inspiring.
Like Africa-Americas, Koreans have their “Soul food!” From a historical perspective, its understandable why certain types of foods are popular and comfortable to Koreans, even today. A few examples are; boiled larva (본대기), all parts of a pig including intestines, various kinds of mountain plants, & dog meat 똥개 (개고기)Ddong gae to name a few things I've noticed frequently. Because Korean have gone through the best of times & the worst of times, during those times of lack they adapted and learned to make and appreciate whatever food was available.
In this post, I'd like to share just a few of the typical, yet wonderful, things that I eat regularly here in Busan,Korea:
부침개 / 전 Buchimgae/Jeon: Known as the “Korean pancake” with veggies and seafood. The picture below is 1 of several styles.
Tteok: Korean rice cake, made in many styles, but all from pounded rice or rice flour, sweetend bean paste and or plants. Heavy, healthy, marvelous!
Kalguksu: My personal fav. Hand-cut flour noodles in a soup with clams, egg, seaweed and if youre lucky, some shrimp! Yummy Yummy Yummy!
떡볶이 (Tteokbokki): EVERYONE’S favorite street food! Pounded rice logs and fish patties saturated in a Spicy & sweet chili sauce…heavy, unhealthy and Oh,so addicting!
어묵 (Eomuk)/oden: Fish patties, soaked for hours in a yummy broth. A salty and addicting street food! Also sold in Japan, with Hot mustard sauce (even better!)
김밥 Kimbab: “Korean fast food” ingredients like pickled radish, cucumber, spinach, imitation crab or numerous other things rolled up and lightly basted with sesame oil! Addicting!
Denjanchigae: Another Korean household staple. A stew made with soybean paste, vegetables and seafood- served in a hotpot. Cheap and tasty!
Dorsut bibimbap: Classic Korean favorite! Rice under mixed vegetables & an egg-served. Severd in a HOT-Hotpot with chili sauce! Excellent!
함흥냉면 Naengmyeon (Buckwheat noodles, in a unique tasting broth, topped 1/2 a hard-boiled egg, slice of pork & chili sauce)
죽 Juk: Hearty & Healthy Rice porridge made with many different ingredients. I like salmon, crab, and kimchi Juk! Great in the winter!
I could go on forever, with pictures & descriptions of delicious Korean cuisines... truly. But It not fair to just talk such a beautiful part of Korean culture...I recommend you visit Korea and Experience it for yourself! If that won't work into your life plan, head to an awesome & local Korean restaurant and experience the next best thing! Let me know how your food adventure goes ;)
